Few notes from this interview of Evan Williams from Jason Calacanis (remember that Evan is not much not less than the co-founder of Blogger sold to Google in 2003):

Twitter sort of really took off when they changed the relationship model from "reciprocal" to a "one-way" relationship. It made the whole thing just much more easy (and closest to the blog concept) and that's when the term of follower was introduced (08:00).

Adding picture/video just add complexity, it will come but they want to make sure to make it right (=easy).

Lots of features are coming thanks to providing an (easy) API.

Twitter pays for the SMS sent... and the business model is not quite clear right now.
