Reflex Magazine

Newcomer in the swiss press Reflex, a joint effort from Largeur.com and the EPFL, is all about technology, science and innovation! Did not have the time yet to go through but it is promising.

English version is also available!

  Endoxon acquired by Google!

Wouah! Congrats

Note that Endoxon is providing mapping technology to Local.ch

  What about UAProf ?

The mobile web is, at least, getting the attraction it deserves to (and that I have been waiting forever :-). One of the downside is that newcomers jump in the discussion and ask the same question that have been discussed forever...

Most of us are aware of the fact that there are several limitations of WURFL. [...] A possible solution for aforementioned problems could be UAProf. (#)

Example for the Nokia 6681

Compilation of answers from Luca (WURFL) and Barbara:

  • UAProf is frequently wrong (which is quite surprising since infos are provided by the manufacturer);
  • UAProf data is not as standard as it should;
  • UAProf data is extremely limited, as it should be to keep overhead down;
  • WURFL does import UAProf data whenever a new device is kind enough to leave an UAProf URL;

For more informations:

The list of available UAProf files for Nokia devices can be found there and UAProf files can be accessed at http://nds1.nds.nokia.com/uaprof/<filename>.

  The power of community

Two things that strucked me last week about BleuBlog, the blog plateform KAYWA is running for Edipresse/Le Matin Bleu

1) Over 100'000 comments in 9 months....

2) When a community like BleuBlog organises by itself without external help a Christmas gathering like the one the "BleuBlogueurs" are setting up next Thursday it must means something... no ?

  Barcode Manifesto

Excellent piece of writing from Tommi over on S60 application blog: 2D Barcode Manifesto. The discussion that follows is also very interesting (as much as the post itself) with Dennis from ShotCode ans Stan from Semapedia around the content of the codes... shortcode vs. url

I believe there is a market and an use for both... shortcode has some advantages over url! Size is one advanatge and then there is all the services you can provide on top of it.

I don't see a solution for ID's unless there is open number space for ID url mappings. (#)

Yes...

In my view codes should be like the internet, you don’t earn money with the internet, you earn money with the solutions you provide via the internet. (#)

I think that for instance kaywa is heading in the right direction by creating a browser and by providing solutions and concepts. The only thing is that kaywa should be blamed for misusing the open standard by creating a adding an own shortcode in the system. (#)

  Mobile Tag in 20 Minuten

  QR Code ? Datamatrix ? What about Mobile Tag ?

Wether it is a QR Code or a Datamatrix does not really matter for the end user.

Technically they both have their own specifications and their own pro/con and which one to use can be context-dependant... Anyway KAYWA Reader can read both.

What is important now is to get to the point where the user should not have to worry about what kind of code it is ? and of course that starts with finding a good generic name to use when we talk about those codes.

Mobile Tag seems to be a good candidate... what would be the alternatives ? Mobile Code ? mTag ? mCode ?

KAYWA Reader ? You can download it there. You can have some news about it on the corporate blog and there is even a feed for your aggregator.

  leweb3 on live.vpod.tv

live.vpod.tv, no need to go there... :-) well of course the networking part, which is not the less interesting part, is missing!

I was there the first 2 editions (called "les blogs" back at this time) and it would have been interesting to see how it has evolved, to see how this conference looks now with over 1000 participants...

  SoonR and Swisscom release Media Bridge

Access your PC from your mobile... swisscom.soonr.com

There is even a Media Bridge Uploader that lets you send directly to your home computer pictures you take from your mobile phone. Pictures are sent "Over the Air" and the good news is that there is NO data transfer fee... as long as it is in beta!!!

I tried to install the uploader tool on my Nokia 6630 but it did not work... too bad!
